Sanjay has over 20 years of experience working in all segments of the tea industry from production to the end market, with a particular focus on smallholder tea development in South Asia and East Africa. He currently manages The Wood Foundation’s country programme in Rwanda, taking overall responsibility for the Foundation’s investment portfolio in tea in the country. This encompasses overseeing investments in two 100% smallholder-supplied tea factories, two new tea greenfield developments in partnership with major international investors, and a tea sector support programme. With a professional background in tea tasting and buying, Sanjay also leads all tea marketing efforts on behalf of the two tea factories, as well as serving as liaison with Government of Rwanda in relation to The Wood Foundation’s support to the development of the tea industry in country.
Previously Sanjay has worked as a tea buyer with Taylors of Harrogate managing their DFID co-funded quality enhancement programme in Rwanda. While living in the UK he also served on the advisory committee of DFID’s Food Retail Industry Challenge Fund.
