Sir Philip Hampton was appointed to the Board of RBS Group as Deputy Chairman in January 2009 and to the position of Chairman on 3 February 2009.  In November 2009 Philip was appointed a non-executive Director of Anglo American plc.

Philip retired as Chairman of J Sainsbury plc in October 2009 after five years in the Chair and is the former Chairman of UK Financial Investments Limited, the company established to manage the UK Government’s shareholding in banks subscribing to its recapitalisation fund.

He joined the auditors, Coopers & Lybrand, in 1975 and worked in London and West Africa.  In 1981 he joined Lazard Brothers working on mergers and acquisitions, business restructurings and capital markets.  In 1986 Sir Philip was seconded to Lazard Freres,New Yorkand also worked extensively with Lazard Freres inParis.  From 1990, he worked for British Steel plc as Group Finance Director.  He became Group Finance Director of British Gas in July 1996 and BT’s Group Finance Director in October 2000.  From June 2002 until March 2004 he was Finance Director for LloydsTSB.

Sir Philip was a non-executive Director of RMC Group from 2002-2005, Belgacom inBelgiumfrom 2004 - 2010 and a former Vice Chairman of the CBI from 2008-2009.

In 1975 Sir Philip graduated from Lincoln College,Oxford with an MA in English and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1978. He is an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.  He obtained an MBA from INSEAD in Fontaine bleau during 1980-1981.
