Shadow Minister for the Natural Environment & Fisheries, Labour

Barry Gardiner MP has been the Member of Parliament for Brent North since 1997 and is Labour’s Shadow Minister for the Natural Environment & Fisheries.

Barry has previously held a number of Ministerial posts, having been a Direct Rule Minister in Northern Ireland, Competitiveness Minister in the Dept of Trade and Industry and served as the country’s first Minister for Biodiversity. He was later appointed as The Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Forestry.

In Parliament, Barry chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Biodiversity, co-chaired the APPG on the Green Deal and was, until recently, a member of both the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee and the Environment Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee.

Barry is a former Chairman of GLOBE International with whom he worked to develop international policy in such areas as illegal logging, land use change, fisheries, climate change and Natural Capital accounting.

Barry is a regular speaker at various international environmental summits and was an advisor to the Commonwealth Business Council on Green Economic Growth and Climate Change. In 2011 Barry was appointed Special Envoy for Climate Change & The Environment by the Leader of the Opposition, Ed Miliband and has been on Labour’s front bench as Shadow Minister for the Natural Environment & Fisheries since July 2013.
