Dr Pushpam Kumar, is currently Chief, Ecosystem Services Economics Unit, Division of Environment Programme Implementation, UNEP where he works on mainstreaming of natural capital including ecosystem services into development policy.

For the last twenty four years, his research has been on designing and implementing of economic response options for management of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Dr Kumar has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals of international repute like Science, Bioscience, Ecological Economics, Ambio, Ecosystem Services  and International Development. He has authored, coauthored, edited and co- edited several high impact books on the theme of ecosystems and natural capital published by Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Edward Elgar, Routledge, Earthscan, Sage, Island Press and Mcmillan.

Dr Kumar was Co-coordinating Lead Author and Co-coordinator, Responses Working Group for Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and Lead Author for the Fourth Assessment of the IPCC (Mitigation) – recipient of Nobel Peace Prize for 2007. He was also the Scientific Co-coordinator of the conceptual framework for the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB).

Currently, he leads Global Environment Fund (GEF) supported “Mainstreaming of ecosystem services into development policies (project known as ‘Proecoserv’), Coordinates “Inclusive Wealth Report”, leads “Assessment and Valuation of Land Degradation” under Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Partnership. Dr Kumar holds the Position of Honorary Research Scientist at the Earth Institute of Columbia University, New York and Extraordinary Professor, Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, University of Pretoria. He is member of  Steering Committee of the UNEP led New Enquiry on Greening the Financial Systems, Advisory Board of the Soil Academy, UNCCD, Bonn and is closely involved in designing and conceptualisation of UNEP’s Green Economy 2.0.
