Chair, Defra Natural Capital Committee
Dieter Helm is a Professor at the University of Oxford and a Fellow in Economics at New College, Oxford. He has chaired the Defra Natural Capital Committee since its inception in March 2012, having previously been chairman of the Economics Academic Panel at Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for over a decade.
Dieter is an Associate of the University of Oxford's Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, and an Associate Editor of the Oxford Review of Economic Policy.
Dieter is a member of the Economics Advisory Group to the UK Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change. During 2011, Dieter assisted the European Commission in preparing the Energy Roadmap 2050, serving both as a special advisor to the European Commissioner for Energy and as Chairman of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on the Roadmap.
Previous appointments include: membership of the DTI's Sustainable Energy Policy Advisory Board from 2002 to 2007, the Prime Minister's Council of Science and Technology from 2004 to 2007, and the DTI's Energy Advisory Panel from 1993 to 2003.
Dieter is an Honorary Vice President of the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust.
He has recently published The Climate Crunch (Yale University Press) and is joint editor (with Cameron Hepburn) of Nature in the Balance: the economics of biodiversity, to be published in January 2014 (Oxford University Press).
